Women and Musculoskeletal Disease.

I found this article interesting, and it might partly explain why we see more women than men at our clinic.

The Massage & Myotherapy Australia Fact Sheet 1 on Women and Musculoskeletal Disease, updated 7th Dec 2021, reports that according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2018 more women than men experience osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Women also seek massage treatments at a ratio of 2:1 to men.

The report goes on to say that evidence based research has shown that massage, while not being a cure for musculoskeletal disease, is effective in relieving the symptoms of pain, improving reduced motion and reducing pain associated with these conditions.

It concludes with the statement that “Massage was most effective when combined with education and exercise and when administered by a licenced therapist”.
